Anyone heard of or used terragen before? Can you export the meshes into 3dsmax?
Gloski
heard of played with about two years ago i think never used it extensively hm not sure just try it it's a free software
dwp
u dont need to export the mesh a displacement map will do just fine..
Charles Smith
hmm do professionals use generators.... i guess it would be hard to use displacement maps to make mountains...?
Gloski
hm im not a 3d professional but I think the mesh would be far too big/complex
Charles Smith
i mean how would you model a mountain exactly the way you want it in 3dsmax?
Gloski
i guess it's more about texturing and getting the "right" feeling
dwp
now a days ppl use DEM's a lot..
Charles Smith
what are DEMs?
dwp
digital elevation model its like a height map of the earth..
Charles Smith
ok i've made displacement maps for hills and simple landscapes. How would you make a complicated landscape in photoshop?
Gloski
hm, complicated landscape in photoshop? i'd say that's more about painting skills then 3d smartest thing might be to make it in 3d but to make the textures in photoshop or such
Charles Smith
im not talking about the textures, I just want to get the shape of say a mountain
Gloski
in photoshop? :)
Charles Smith
in anything hehe.
Gloski
is it for, say a skyline?
Charles Smith
im just trying to figure out how to get the same results as if I used a generator
Gloski
id guess you might have more luck in terragen okey terragen may use the same stuff as you can do in 3dsmax a problem that I see though is, even if you can get the same result you might end up having to work for a long time sins terragen creates the "model" more or less by "random"-but restricted values you'd end up having to figure out the same values and getting the settings right but I may be completely of just a thought
