3ds Max: scripting? how to make one object visible only when

ok, is there a way to script so that one object automatically is renderable/non-renderable depending on whether or not a certain other object is intersecting it? it may not make much sense as to why I would want to do it, but it would take too long to explain. it would involve a very large number of objects becoming renderable/non-renderable individually as they are intersected by a larger object. is there a way to do this in max? I'm sure there is, I just don't have a clue as to how to script. Thanks in advance!
