I've got a plane, with a texture on it, and id like to see that on both sides of the plane. How can I do it?
Shawn
Well so tou want to see your texture in the reder or you want to see 2 sided in the viewport?
Ted Town
2 sided in the viewport. I'm following a tutorial which mentions 2 ways to do that, but none have worked
Shawn
if I'm correct its not so easy to setup up 2 sided with direct x use open gl
Ted Town
how do i use open gl or direct x
Shawn
preferences...viewport driver something like that
Ted Town
I've cheked. It says direct x 9. And I've cheked 2 sided on my material.
Shawn
But the 2 sided in the mat editor is not the 2 sided for the viewport
Ted Town
oh ok, so what should i do?
Shawn
right click on the viewport name a menu pops up then options/preferences(?) somewhere is 2 sided
Ted Town
i've tried checking that box, it doesnt change it
Shawn
but as i said i dont think it will work with direct x
Ted Town
i see thats bizarre, why wouldn't it?
Shawn
not sure im always using open gl dx is faster but i dont have 2 sided :P
Ted Town
but it doesnt say in that options thing that i can change to open gl this is ridiculous how can it not work i was messing with max shapes earlier and all kinds of funky stuff was happening, with nurms smoothing or something and now i find that direct x can't put a picture on 2 sides of a plane? is that what youre saying? where's open GL found then?
Reid6754
You can make 2 planes, each facing oposite directions.
Shawn
customize--preferences--viewports--choose driver u can change it to open gl and u have to restart max
Ted Town
great, i saw the option ill see if it works does direct x seriously not do that ?
Shawn
well i think you have to turn on or off another option for dx to get 2 sided but not sure what it was
Ted Town
is there any disadvantage to using open GL and not direct x?
Shawn
well open gl works with 2 sided and some other things...direct X is faster and u can see realtime shaders with it like bump mapping, normal mapping etc
indico
for the record , OpenGL is also slightly less stable than DX as it is dependant on the OpenGL implementation of the graphics card.
UVlas
wouldnt DX be dependent on the DX support of the gfx card too ?
Shawn
less stable than dx ?!?!?
sperll
they both are dependant on the gfx card its just that Directx seems to be able to survive a little better with the lower end / less supportive directX cards then OGL does for the similar situations w/ OGL supported gfx cards I wish OGL would pickup the pace and run directX out the window though
Shawn
never not in max i have a 5750xt and if i use direct x with max, it sucks with realtime shaders open gl works much better with max imho
PolyGru
that actually depends on what type of screen adapter you have the general perception seems to be that ati runs better with d3d, and nvida better on opengl i've had both, and i had to switch depending on which i had
Shawn
maybe...never used/had ati thats mabye a reason why 3d guys usually use nvidia and not ati
PolyGru
im actually more satisfied with ati than nvidia, but that might because I allways had low end nvidia and high end ati
Shawn
hmm ati is for gamers
Gloski
not so sure it's all that simple Shawn but then again I've had very small amounts of experiense with nvidia and CGI
