Aerodynamics in car design?

Post reply

Nikollas
How do I test the aerodynamics of my new concept car? :P
Theamxyz
Throw it in a windtunnel :)
Carl Cates
No need for a windtunnel tho.. you could use a physx engine
Theamxyz
Carl Cates, yeah? Just software?
Carl Cates
It's also a hardware PPU = physics processing unit XSI 5 advanced supports Ageia PhysX actually
Theamxyz
Oh that thing Aegea Or something About 20k physics objects at one time eh?
Carl Cates
Ageia bought Meqon too So they ought to be the best on the subject 40k boxes colliding simultaneously instead of 40 boxes And alleviates CPU Plus it simulates liquids , etc Http://www.ageia.com/physx_in_action/tech_demos.html Check both videos..
Theamxyz
Yeah i saw the movies Of the thing
Carl Cates
The top simulates metal tearing
cord474
Beh the benchmarks so far have been awful
Carl Cates
Benchmarks?
cord474
Like with the same amount of stuff but on their card - the game runs slower ;)
Carl Cates
Hehe nice I was thinking it would be difficult with benchmarks when there are no competitors ;)
Theamxyz
Cool Realtime liquid simulation Thats pretty damn awesome
cord474
Of course not... if it runs slower than on the cpu - you have a problem ;)
Bill Liu
Really awsome realtime liquid. nice!!!
Carl Cates
Imagine it'd be useful for simulating physics in a 3d animation scene Instead of waiting ages
cord474
Waiting ages? maybe in max ;)
Theamxyz
Nah Reactor is pretty fast
Kris
Yeah it is When you have the right world settings :)
Carl Cates
But if you want a REALLY complex scene.. using the CPU will be slow anyway Not talking about software limitations here.. just the vast hardware difference of PPU vs CPU For that kind of calculation
ZaSCoK
Only in theory PPU does very little right now
Carl Cates
Depends on what you use it for
ZaSCoK
Show me one benchmark it does any good on Heh Besides their own Cell Factor Nothing uses it efficiently right now If at all even ATI is aggressivly seeking their own GPU based solution.
Carl Cates
You're talking about games I said it could be used for 3d applications
ZaSCoK
I've only heard XSI announce it But I don't believe it's implemented yet If it has, there has been no testing of it yet
Carl Cates
Only XSI 5 Advanced No other apps so far Ppu technology is in stage of infancy
ZaSCoK
Right now it needs the game more so Game market* So they need a few killer titles Or it won't go past infacy Especially if ATI or nVidia can counter it
Carl Cates
I doubt it will die off This isn't some premature gimmick like Virtual Reality in 95 It will either live on in some form or another Either as part of Nvidia/ATI Gpu's.. or as a function in SLI-solutions Or Ageia will conquer that market
ZaSCoK
I'm not talking about physics acceleration in general I'm speaking of Ageia And their sucess They need to justify now a reason to own a $200 physics card
Carl Cates
Oh ok Time will tell But I remember people said the same thing when the voodoo came :D
ZaSCoK
Well Lol Where are they? ;)
Carl Cates
They?
ZaSCoK
3dfx In the end
Carl Cates
Gobbled up by Nvidia Nvidia was one of the "babies" born out of the GPU generation You are talking not just about Ageia specifically, but the concept and idea of a tertiary PPU Whether it be in the form of Ageia... or Ageia bought up by Nvidia Or ATI did you see that documentary?
ZaSCoK
I haven't yet I have the link bookmarked Need more time first
Carl Cates
Time? you need about 1 hour :)
ZaSCoK
For the PPU though I'd prefer ATI or nVidia
Carl Cates
To be exact 1 hour 13 minutes They wouldn't have the same know-how that Meqon/Ageia has though.. The problem is that the PPU requires cooling Both chips under one fan? I would hope one of them just bought Ageia and assimilated it into a GPU :p If they'd try it alone, without their experience, I know they'd just do it halfassed
ZaSCoK
Wait and see
Carl Cates
Or they could try to amass industrial experience from scratch (or do industrial espionage on ageia)
ZaSCoK
ATI is showing off their capabilities at Computex They are using Havok
Carl Cates
Nothing beats Meqon Those are just halfassed crossfire/sli solutions Am I right? Or is it a GPU doing both graphics and physics? Because I've read that is gonna be more possible with Dx10
ZaSCoK
I wouldn't call it half-assed yet
Bill Liu
Ati and nvidia will have the ability to run both physics and graphics on 1 gpu , or dedicate 1 gpu for physics specificly if in SLI
