Job details: Lead Designer Squad Shooter Mad Doc Software is looking for a Lead Designer to drive the fun factor in an upcoming next generation console and PC squad shooter game.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creative
Take ownership over all areas of the project that impact game play, including story, music, dialogue/VO, UI, and game play systems. Drive resources to produce at a high quality level and that incorporates the vision and requirements set forth by the Creative Director, Project Director and publisher.
Work closely with the Project Director, Creative Director, and other project leads to create the overall vision of the game.
Assess, improve and champion the fun factor of the game.
Collaborate with Creative Director and Project Director to design and clearly communicate the revolutionary elements of the game that will raise it above the static of the general market.
Solicit and assess feedback from team members. Separate the good ideas from the bad ideas and work to include them in the design.
Incorporate publisher feedback and focus group feedback into the design in ways that will allow the company to make a better game.
Jump into the trenches and help the design team to effectively meet commitments by performing design tasks when setbacks occur.
Management
Report status of design team to the PD and P on a regular basis.
Ensure content, system and design implementation coincides with the vision, overview and fine specs as defined in documentation.
Work with P and AP to define, estimate and assign all design tasks on the project. Work with P, PD and Leads to create a big picture plan for getting the game done that can be used to create milestone deliverables, project roadmaps and schedules. Identify key project risks and work to minimize them.
Identify design dependencies that require help from programming and art and work with P and appropriate Lead to effectively schedule the deliverables the design team needs.
Organize and lead design-centric strike teams to refine process and leverage team input into fine specs. Ensure that the conclusions of the strike team are in line with the overall vision of the game. The Lead Designer may designate a person responsible for heading the strike team who then reports directly to the Lead designer and is responsible for driving the strike team.
Ensure the quality and consistency of the documentation, content and systems created by the designers by establishing clear standards.
Teambuilding; assess the quality and compatibility of new hires and ensure that the people brought in match the required needs of the position.
Mentor and train senior and junior designers in tools and processes necessary to grow and advance in the company.
Serve as the main point of contact between design and art\programming.
Present design ideas, inspirations and team achievements to the publisher during phone calls and onsite visits. Help publisher representatives to understand the design strengths of the game so they can sell it internally and externally.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of 5 years industry experience
At least one credit as Lead Designer on a blockbuster shooter title.
Understanding of Unreal Engine technology
Demonstrable experience creating implementation specs and driving the game development process.
