But the 2 sided in the mat editor is not the 2 sided for the viewport

right click on the viewport name
a menu pops up
then options/preferences(?)
somewhere is 2 sided

but it doesnt say in that options thing that i can change to open gl
this is ridiculous
how can it not work
i was messing with max shapes earlier
and all kinds of funky stuff was happening, with nurms smoothing or something
and now i find that direct x can't put a picture on 2 sides of a plane?
is that what youre saying?
where's open GL found then?

You can make 2 planes, each facing oposite directions.

well i think you have to turn on or off another option for dx to get 2 sided but not sure what it was

is there any disadvantage to using open GL and not direct x?

well open gl works with 2 sided and some other things...direct X is faster and u can see realtime shaders with it
like bump mapping, normal mapping etc

for the record , OpenGL is also slightly less stable than DX as it is dependant on the OpenGL implementation of the graphics card.

wouldnt DX be dependent on the DX support of the gfx card too ?

they both are dependant on the gfx card
its just that Directx seems to be able to survive a little better with the lower end / less supportive directX cards
then OGL does for the similar situations w/ OGL supported gfx cards
I wish OGL would pickup the pace and run directX out the window though

never
not in max
i have a 5750xt and if i use direct x with max, it sucks with realtime shaders
open gl works much better with max imho

that actually depends on what type of screen adapter you have
the general perception seems to be that ati runs better with d3d, and nvida better on opengl
i've had both, and i had to switch depending on which i had

maybe...never used/had ati
thats mabye a reason why 3d guys usually use nvidia and not ati

im actually more satisfied with ati than nvidia, but that might because I allways had low end nvidia and high end ati
