Job details: Award winning animation studio, LAIKA Inc, based in Portland Oregon and owned by Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike is looking for Assistant Directors for its Stop-Motion Animated Feature "Coraline"
LAIKA/entertainment is currently in production on several Animated Feature Films including: Neil Gaiman's "Coraline", written for the screen and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and The Giant Peach); and "Jack & Ben", written and directed by Jorgen Klubien (Cars, Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid). The company recently purchased the rights to one of the U.K.'s current best-selling children's novels, writer/illustrator Alan Snow's "Here Be Monsters". LAIKA/house is a dynamic community of filmmakers, designers and animators guided by a legacy of 30 years of animation history. Notorious for its skills in storytelling and character performance, LAIKA/house produces every type of animation in every medium.
The Assistant Director is responsible for keeping the production moving to meet scheduling goals.
Responsibilities:
- Creates and maintains a positive and organized environment during production shooting.
- Ensures the turnarounds between set-ups are properly completed and in a timely manner.
- Ensures the Director's needs are met on the shoot.
- Supports the 1st AD in achieving targets outside of the set in addition to supporting the set.
- Assists in the morning preparation in accordance with the daily schedule.
- Acts as point of contact for questions and issues to relieve 1st AD of more routine inquiries and tasks.
- Provides guidance to 3rd AD as needed.
- Creates an energetic atmosphere by demonstrating a sense of urgency and modeling behavior to be emulated.
- Ensures that the following day's schedule is updated throughout the day and finalized at day's end.
- Ensures animators and crew are aware of start and finish times for the following day and week.
- Drafts the directors and daily shooting schedule to be reviewed and approved by the 1st AD.
- Tracks and reports on production data as needed.
Qualifications:
- Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with all levels within the organization.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Understanding of production scheduling.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to motivate others.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2+ years experience as a 2nd or 3rd AD or Production Coordinator preferable in animation.
