The University of Calgary is currently accepting applications for a regular full-time Senior Communications Manager. This joint appointment reports to the Director, Communications in the Office of the Vice-President, External Relations, and the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
As the Senior Communications Manager, your primary objective is to manage internal and external communications strategies, projects, events, initiatives, and publications. The senior communications manager is responsible for planning, creating and implementing the faculty's overall strategic communications plan and for coordinating publications, written and verbal communications, media relations, event management and website management. The manager is also responsible for advising and contributing to the communications strategies of the School's fund development, recruitment initiatives and alumni development. You will have joint accountabilities to the Dean and the Office of the Vice-president, External Relations and provide senior-level strategic advice and communications, and direction of other communication staff as assigned. As part of the Dean's senior administrative team, you will develop productive relationships with the faculty's leadership team, other faculty members and students.
You will work collaboratively with the External Relations Department to ensure the communications message is on strategy and consistent with overall institutional efforts, and ensure faculty representation in all University publications and other communications media. You will ensure faculty representation in all functions of External Relations, including government relations, community relations and alumni relations. You will also act as a resource person to the faculty's departments and community partners, implementing and/or coordinating efforts in the areas of positioning, information gathering and dispersal, web site presentation, media relations, community relations and other areas as required.
Your accountabilities include the development of a strategic communications plan for the Faculty of Fine Arts, with a focus on proactively highlighting the faculty and the university to an external community. You will supervise faculty communications staff, and you will also oversee the development of quality and timely communication materials, both print and online. You will proactively seek out research and teaching and learning stories and share them with external and internal audiences. You will provide long-term and short-term communications advice to senior leaders within the faculty. You will also be responsible for all faculty-related websites, and will oversee the management and update of websites. You will also oversee the development of a community engagement strategic plan, which positions the Faculty in the Calgary and Canadian arts scene.
You will also oversee the marketing and public relations strategy of faculty-related events.
Your qualifications include a related post-secondary degree and significant experience in the communications field, particularly around strategic communications planning and implementation. Experience in the arts community would be an asset. You have demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, visual design and production and project management; and experience in producing a variety of communication vehicles aimed at various internal and external audiences. You have communications experience in a large complex organization; extensive team management; are able to successfully manage a budget, have knowledge of post-secondary educational issues; media relations experience; and community liaison experience. You have the ability to work with staff at all levels, to work under pressure and deadlines, and to handle numerous priorities at once. As well, you are able to work collaboratively with others on campus, and to work with design, communications, and printing departments, both on and off campus is essential.
Accountabilities include:
- Achieve strategic faculty communication objectives, in support of the University mission, Academic Plan, and other initiatives.
- Plan and implement a broad range of publications, community events, and other communication tools toward a positive image and reputation for the faculty and the University of Calgary.
- Provide strategic communications advice and support to faculty members.
- Enforce brand and positioning protocols for the marketing efforts of the faculty.
- Develop, in conjunction with the Dean, a faculty communications budget, and subsequently manage the finances related to that budget.
- Manage relationships of outside communications contractors, freelancers, design providers.
- Offer written contributions on a timely basis to OnCampus, U magazine, U of C homepage, and other University publications and projects - - specifically write minimum of three stories per year for U magazine, 25 for OnCampus and regular submissions to the University's website and other associated websites
- Plan and implement monthly news conference focusing on innovative faculty research, student initiatives, etc.
- Timely and regular contributions to In the News and other media relations initiatives
- Work professionally and collaboratively with other campus communicators, as well as other members of the External Relations team; offering engaged, strategic participation in all major External Relations events: Arch Awards, Campus Fair, Report to the Community, etc.
