Job details: Award winning animation studio, LAIKA Inc, based in Portland Oregon and owned by Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike is seeking a Software Manager for its Research & Development Department.
LAIKA/entertainment is currently in production on several animated feature films including: Neil Gaiman's "Coraline" , written for the screen and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and The Giant Peach); and "Jack & Ben", written and directed by Jorgen Klubien (Cars, Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid). The company recently purchased the rights to one of the U.K.'s current best-selling children's novels, writer/illustrator Alan Snow's "Here Be Monsters". LAIKA/house is a dynamic community of filmmakers, designers and animators guided by a legacy of 30 years of animation history. Notorious for its skills in storytelling and character performance, LAIKA/house produces every type of animation in every medium.
The Software Manager works closely with Artists and Technical Directors to research, design, and develop in-house software tools to solve production issues and make productions more efficient. Responsibilities include managing the building of new systems, maintenance of current systems, and supporting artists in completing production tasks.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Proactively seek new technologies, techniques, and software development processes that will benefit production.
- Responsible for the management of development of software, plugins, and best practices.
- Assist/Guide developers with maintenance of existing applications and the creation of new projects.
- Oversee development of test plans and analysis for evaluation of production pipeline tool performance.
- Manage the complete application/tool identification, research, development, and support cycle.
- Communicate project status information to other department heads.
- Manage staff career growth and development.
- Manage the productivity of staff.
- Report on group technical initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or science related field.
- 5-10 years experience with strong C/C++ or equivalent application development in both console and GUI modes.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with 3D/2D graphics algorithms and commercial applications: Maya, Houdini, Shake, MTOR, prman or equivalents.
- Experience developing applications for Linux.
- Experience guiding/leading other software developers.
- Be located on-site for work-related duties and responsibilities.
Relevant Required Abilities and Attributes:
- Demonstrated ability to manage time according to current priorities in an efficient manner.
- Balance the time constraints of production with the development of code that is maintainable and extendable in the future.
- Demonstrated strength in the fundamentals of object orientation, algorithms, systems, data structures, and languages.
- Good communication skills with a wide variety of personalities.
- Must be able to handle both long and short term tasks efficiently.
- Must be able to manage software developers.
Preferred Abilities and Knowledge:
- 2-3 years computer graphics experience.
- Production experience with Commercial 3D and 2D applications: Maya, Houdini, Shake, MTOR, prman.
- Knowledge and experience in 3D/2D algorithms.
- Knowledge of object oriented design principles and comfort with a wide variety of data structures.
- Experience on Linux, cross-platform development with Qt.
