Job details: Award winning animation studio, LAIKA Inc, based in Portland Oregon and owned by Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike, is seeking Pipeline Technical Director for its Research & Development Department to develop tools, systems, and procedures.



LAIKA/entertainment is currently in production on several animated feature films including: Neil Gaiman's "Coraline", written for the screen and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and The Giant Peach); and "Jack & Ben", written and directed by Jorgen Klubien (Cars, Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid). The company recently purchased the rights to one of the U.K.'s current best-selling children's novels, writer/illustrator Alan Snow's "Here Be Monsters". LAIKA/house is a dynamic community of filmmakers, designers and animators guided by a legacy of 30 years of animation history. Notorious for its skills in storytelling and character performance, LAIKA/house produces every type of animation in every medium.



The Pipeline Technical Director's primary responsibility is to develop tools, systems, and procedures to facilitate the flow of data between departments in an efficient, organized, and simple to use way. In addition, the Pipeline TD must disseminate the practices and procedures that best utilize these tools.



As the Pipeline group is responsible for the flow of data through the entire production process, it is necessary for the Pipeline TD to have an understanding of this process and be able to anticipate the data-flow related needs of the different production departments. The Pipeline TD is also responsible for maintaining code, fixing bugs, troubleshooting, and maintaining documentation.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities



* Proactively seek new technologies, techniques, and processes that will benefit production.

* Responsible for the development of scripts and best practices.

* Oversee development of test plans and analysis for evaluation of production pipeline tool performance.

* Define, develop, and maintain data transports between production applications/disciplines.

* Maintain an understanding of the complete production pipeline.

* Support the pipeline toolset and workflow by handling production issues/questions.



Minimum Qualifications



* Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or science related field or equivalent experience/training.

* 2+ years film production experience as a TD or other technical lead.

* Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with several of our production applications: Maya, Houdini, Shake, MTOR, prman or equivalents.

* Experience scripting in Perl/Python.

* Be located on-site for work-related duties and responsibilities.



Relevant Required Abilities and Attributes:



* Demonstrated ability to manage time according to current priorities in an efficient manner.

* Balance the time constraints of production with the development of scripts that are maintainable and extendable in the future.

* Good communication skills with a wide variety of personalities.

* Be able to write in multiple scripting languages.



Preferred Abilities and Knowledge:



* Experience on Linux, cross-platform development with Qt.

* Experience scripting for render queues: Rush, Alfred
