is looking for Director of Undergraduate Studies in Design and Technology & Assistant/Associate Professor
Job details: Parsons The New School for Design, one of the largest schools of design in North America, is seeking applicants, pending budget approval, for a full-time faculty Director of Undergraduate Studies in Design and Technology which includes a four-year BFA program as well as open electives in digital design for undergraduate students across Parsons.
Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in exploring the future of media and communication design in an academic environment that encourages open collaboration, bold experimentation and intellectual entrepreneurship. The BFA in design and technology provides an education focused around the exploration of design and the creative implications of emerging technologies. The Director of Undergraduate Curricula will play an essential leadership role in shaping this new, growing program (launched in 2001, currently 130 students) and further developing its curricular pathways in game design, motion media and interaction design. The BFA in Design and Technology program is philosophically linked and co-located with the department's other academic programs; the MFA in Design and Technology and the BFA in Communication Design.
In addition to opportunities within and between these programs, collaboration with other departments at Parsons and university-wide is encouraged. Our faculty are currently engaged in research and teaching with faculty in Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Business, International Affairs, and Media Studies. In addition, university research centers such as the Parsons Institute for Information Mapping provide a cutting edge space for faculty and student research and industry partnerships.
Requirements
The successful appointee will generally:
- A PhD or MFA in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional standing;
- Substantial teaching experience with a demonstrated interest in curricular development;
- Possess a demonstrated record of scholarship and professional activity in the area of technology driven design;
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and interest in areas such as interaction-design, game design, animation and motion graphics, mobile media, user-centered design and the social implications of technology.
Start date: July 1, 2007.
Salary: Competitive.
Benefits: Tuition and comprehensive health insurance.
A letter of application relating experience and interests to the opportunities and requirements of the position, together with Curriculum Vitae should be submitted online. Please note that application material submitted online only will be reviewed and considered.
Further information regarding the position can be obtained from Ted Byfield, Associate Chair, Department of Communication Design and Technology, Parsons The New School for Design, 66 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011. Tel: 212-229-8908 or byfieldt@newschool.edu.
