POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, the Computer Graphic Designer is responsible for creating vinyl and/or full color graphics output that can be weeded, cut and applied or printed and mounted to a substrate by a sign maker. This may involve various levels of creativity and will ultimately lead to the complete design or modified design from customer drawings, files, or exact output of customer-provided design for output to vinyl.
RESPONSIBI LITI ES
1. Prioritize each day to efficiently and cost-effectively schedule the workflow.
2. Determine the best output method based on the customer’s need.
3. Read and interpret a Work Order to cut vinyl; lay out and design signs according to written instructions.
4. Work with customers, as necessary, with file transfers, FTP access, Corbis photo library options, online proofs, etc.
5. Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, selects style and size of type, and arranges layout based upon available space, aesthetic design, and production requirements.
6. Prepares comprehensive illustrations, sketches, layouts, and copy for print reproduction according to instructions of client or supervisor.
7. Allocate appropriate amount of time to jobs based on the value of each job; track computer production rate per hour.
8. Inspect jobs for accuracy before sending them to the plotter or printer. 9. Cut vinyl so it can be easily weeded; cut re-cuts as necessary.
10. Logo maintenance and sourcing scanning, editing, convert graphic files.
11. Image Sourcing locate photos, understand copyright laws and release/usage requirements, knowledge of resources to buy stock images, work with service bureaus to create output beyond store capability, and understand resolution options and optimal enlargement specifications from image vendors and image originals.
12. Provide proofs as necessary for customer and prospect approval.
13. Perform daily/weekly computer back-ups; archive files as necessary.
14. Maintain all equipment including computers, plotters and printers (water-soluble printers, thermal transfer printers, solvent ink printers, etc.).
15. Maintain accurate electronic and paper record of File Storage and Disks (logs, saving by invoice number, dating) as specified in the FIl Operations Manual.
12. Minimize waste by efficiently using ink, media, laminates, foils and vinyl; notify manager/owner of low inventory.
13. Communicate with other employees and customers: Sales/Service members on job requirements, timing, and special needs; Sign Maker(s) on job input and output; Production Manager/Store Manager on inventory needs for computer supplies; Customers and outside vendors on file conversion needs and saving files to disks.
14. Assist Sign Maker(s) in production when time allows. Assist CSR at the front counter as needed.
15. Increases knowledge of computer graphic design through reading trade publications and independent study.
16. Keep the computer room neat, clean and organized.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience: Any combination of education, training or general experience that would provide the required skills This could include:
1. Formal or informal education to have a working knowledge of both PC and MAC operating systems.
2. Previous experience as a graphic designer, sign-related computer operator or in desktop publishing.
3. Pass all assessments/inventories administered during the hiring process. Knowledge: Correct English language usage including spelling, grammar and punctuation; ability to proofread; basic math; sign basics including design theory, typestyles, and color theory, etc.
Skills: Conceptualizing and creating designs from ideas or rough drawings; proficient in PC and MAC operating systems; extensive use of any/all of the following desktop publishing software programs on both MAC and PC: Onyx, Adobe Ilustrator, CoreIDRAW!/ sign production software including Gerber, knowledge of solvent printing; touch typing with accuracy.
Desirable Qualifications/Traits: Easy-going, adaptable personality; positive “get it done” attitude; flexibility to work (and be compensated for) overtime on occasion; quality conscious; ability to work at a fast pace; ability to work independently and in a team setting; ability to communicate with colleagues and customers; emotional maturity; a manageable design ego; patience.
EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
1. $16 per hour.
2. One week of vacation after 1 year of service; two weeks of vacation after 2 years of service.
3. Eight paid holidays.
4. Participation in 401K program after 1 year of service.
