Job details: General Summary
The
Supervising TD of the Workflow group is responsible for planning and executing
the vision and direction of the Workflow TD group. This includes supervising
the Workflow TDs, tasking them with projects, scheduling, and helping to
prioritize their work, as well as being directly involved with specific
projects as appropriate. He/She also
acts as a representative of the Workflow TD group both inside and outside of
R&D, the Technology Division, and the studio.
The
Workflow TD group endeavors to provide the reference standard for all
production techniques used at Laika, providing these to, and also recycling
these from, all in-house productions. It
is responsible for proactively problem solving so as to deliver the visual
style required of all active productions in a timely manner. To accomplish this, the Workflow TD group
works to actively improve production artist workflows, enabling the artist to
better stay ‘in the flow,’ while working.
Among other things, this includes the design and implementation of new
techniques, tools and procedures, the establishment of useful conventions, the
creation of educational materials, the establishment of look&feel
standards, the troubleshooting of existing systems and similar
productivity-enhancing endeavors. Thus,
it is necessary for the Supervising TD to have an understanding and vision of
this process so as to guide it, and work proactively to anticipate the needs of
the different production departments.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Proactively
seek new technologies, techniques, and processes that will benefit
production.
- Provide
a unifying, global vision for pipeline-wide workflow consistency and
ease-of-use. Work with others to
communicate that vision throughout the company.
- Oversee
development of Workflow TD project plans with known deliverables and
delivery dates
- Establish
documentation and training standards to enable the creation of consistent
pipeline-wide educational materials.
- Work
with the documentation and training departments to establish an
educational program for new production artists.
- Maintain
an understanding in the group of the complete production workflow and a
working knowledge of the underlying pipeline support infrastructure.
- Manage
the support of production workflows by connecting appropriate staff to
production issues/questions.
- Be a
Workflow TD for the Workflow TD group itself, designing the same workflow
improvements for the group, which the group gives to its production
disciplines. (See above paragraph
on what the Workflow TD group provides)
- Communicate
project status information to other department heads and production
management.
- Manage
staff career growth and development.
- Manage
the productivity of staff.
- Report
on group technical initiatives
- Researches
new computer graphic techniques and works with Software department to
develop and implement them appropriately into the CG pipeline and
workflow.
- Work
with Software Manager/group to provide tools for use by the directors,
designer, VFX Supervisor and show TDs to meet the aesthetic requirements
of each production.
Interpersonal Contacts
The
Supervising Workflow TD interfaces with all staff of the production including
artists, TDs, production management and the Director.
The
Supervising TD works closely with the Show Workflow TD, the CG/VFX supervisor
and other production management, to ensure that all relevant R&D is
transferred to a production, and that production challenges help educate future
workflow R&D.
Works
with R&D Production Manager to prioritize and assign TDs to the rapid
solution of production problems.
Work with
the other managers in the R&D dept to coordinate, develop and improve core
LAIKA tools and techniques and other departmental production work.
As a part
of the Research and Development department, it is expected the Supervising TD
will stay current on industry trends and proactively suggest ways production
can be improved.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an
Engineering/science related field or equivalent experience/training.
- Strong written and verbal
communication skills
- 4+ years high-end film production
experience as a TD or other technical lead.
- Demonstrated knowledge and
experience working with several of our production applications: Maya,
Houdini, Shake, MTOR, prman or equivalents.
- Experience scripting in
Perl/Python.
- Experience guiding/leading other
TDs/software developers.
- Be located on-site for
work-related duties and responsibilities.
- Strong usability/user-interface
design background
Relevant Required Abilities and
Attributes:
- Demonstrated ability to manage
time according to current priorities in an efficient manner.
- Balance the time constraints of
production with the development of scripts that are maintainable and
extendable in the future.
- Good communication skills with a
wide variety of personalities.
- Must be able to manage TDs.
- Be able to write in multiple
scripting languages.
Preferred Abilities and
Knowledge:
- Experience on Linux,
cross-platform development with Qt
