The primary purpose of the Writer and Media Relations Coordinator position is to support the communication needs of the CIO, lead the development and implementation of communications planning to address issues and trends impacting IT and higher education, and to convey essential information about the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology (ITaP). The position will serve as spokesperson to campus and local media for ITaP, particularly about outage notifications, computer security incidents, and responses to local and campus media inquiries. The position will develop and write copy for correspondence, reports, talking points, presentations, newsletters, Web sites, collateral for special events, and other messages on strategic topics for the CIO, primarily, and for other business units of ITaP as assigned. The position will maintain and revise communication procedures for outage notification and security incidents, coordinate meetings or represent ITaP at meetings as assigned, and collaborate with organization leadership and staff writers on the identification of issues and trends for story development.

Minimum Requirements:

Required:

Bachelor's degree with three or more years in writing and editing for publication. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Excellent oral/written communication skills. Ability to write explanatory newsletter articles, correspondence, status reports, presentations and speeches based on technical information for a variety of audiences. Knowledge of journalistic conventions and styles (especially AP) is required. Ability to self-start and conduct independent background research in response to media inquiries in a fast-paced environment while meeting tight deadlines. Ability to work and communicate ideas in a collaborative manner with editors, graphic designers and photographers.

Preferred:

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Advertising or related field. General background and/or understanding and aptitude in information technology. Ability to communicate audience-appropriate information to the media. Ability to establish and maintain relationships and contacts internally to ITaP and Purdue as well as externally with media personnel.
