Job details: Description of Duties:


The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is seeking a writer/editor to work with the Communications Division, reporting directly to the Communications Director. Duties include writing speeches and creating presentations for the State Superintendent of Schools and others in the GaDOE, as necessary; working with the Communications Division and the Superintendent to develop topics and messages and provide well-written, accurate speeches and presentations in a timely manner; providing content for on-line and hard-copy publications including brochures, newsletters, press releases and position statements.; writing letters on behalf of the Superintendent, as well as other external and internal communications as needed; editing and proofreading brochures, letters, documents, proposals, press releases, speeches and other publications and written material, as assigned; working with any and all divisions inside the GaDOE to develop, edit and proofread written materials; working with the entire Communications Team to promote the strategic external and internal communications for the GaDOE; abiding by all Departmental policies and regulations; other tasks and duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:


Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, English, public relations or a related field AND a minimum of three years full-time experience in a communications-related field, with a varied body of written work.




Preferred Qualifications:


Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:





- Professional experience in public policy, public administration or corporate communications


- Experience as a speech writer in a public policy or political arena


- The ability to work with a team and the ability to multitask.


- A basic understanding of public education and the role of the Georgia Department of Education


and the State Superintendent of Schools.


- Experience in K-12 public education


- A strong familiarity with important education policies in Georgia and the nation




Salary/Benefits:


Pay grade 15 – Annual salary range $34,533.36 (minimum) to $66,487.20 (maximum). Hiring salary range is $34,533.36 - $66,487.20, commensurate with current employment and relevant education/training and work experience and available funding. Benefit options include life, disability, dental and health insurance, annual/sick leave, and Employees’ Retirement or Teachers’ Retirement.
