Job details: position overview
The Technical Director is responsible for providing the technical requirements of a Maya/MentalRay feature film pipeline.
duties and responsibilities
-
Oversee all of the technical requirements of a specific production; work with producers, directors, animation and modeling supervisors to determine these needs, either alone or under the guidance of the Lighting Supervisor.
- Develop and maintain leading-edge proprietary tools/shaders/plugins/scripts used in animation production.
- Supervise/Coordinate Lighting support staff.
- Create and maintain technical effects/shots as directed by the Lighting/Effects team.
- Provide additional technical support, as needed.
- Attend regular production and software meetings.
- Assist in the development of a feature film pipeline.
- Collaborate with software developers in fulfilling the needs of the production.
- Interact with the IT staff with respect to operating, file, and network systems issues.
- Evaluate and recommend relevant external shaders/plugins/scripts.
- Interact with commercial vendors with respect to technical issues affecting proprietary shaders, etc.
- Provide training/tutorials to production staff.
- Maintain contacts with academia/industry to keep current on new research and competitor developments.
- Acquire and maintain up-to-date knowledge in the relevant fields.
- Expert knowledge of Maya, Mental Ray, Knull scripting
- Able to help troubleshoot render issues through lighting department
- Must be excellent communicator
- Work with lead lighters to develop efficient rendering scripts such as IE, final gathering, shadow and shader issues core competencies
Planning – Accurately estimates length and difficulty of tasks and projects; sets objectives and goals; breaks down work into appropriate process steps; develops schedules and task/people assignments; anticipates and adjusts for problems and roadblocks; measures performance against goals; evaluates results.
Priority Setting – Manages time appropriately; quickly focuses on the critical few, setting the trivial many aside; can quickly sense what will help or hinder accomplishing a goal; eliminates roadblocks; creates focus.
Problem Solving – Uses rigorous, logical processes to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; probes all fruitful sources for answers; can see hidden problems; is excellent at honest analysis; looks beyond the obvious; doesn’t necessarily stop at the first answer.
qualifications
- Advanced degree in Computing Science, Mathematics, Physics or related disciplines.
- 3+ years production experience.
- Thorough knowledge of digital 3D animation and special effects.
- Thorough knowledge of Maya and MentalRay.
- Thorough knowledge of UNIX/Linux, procedural and object-oriented programming languages, shader/plugin writing as well as shell/Perl/Python scripting.
- Excellent problem solving and communication skills.
- Good artistic skills; demonstrable ability to make creative and aesthetic judgment calls. About the Feature Film
“Escape from Planet Earth,” is a CG-animated comedy feature about a prison break where the prison is actually Area 51, a mysterious government facility where the inmates are a rag-tag group of aliens from every corner of the universe.
