Beside NewTek and autodesk there are companies like Luxology with modo 3d, Maxon with Cinema 4d, Sidefx with houdini... Project messiah, Zbrush finally. Also there are other smaller players in this industry.
So Autodesk has some decent competition...

I used to use Lightwave. At that time, it was one of the hottest 3D program around.
Many TV series were made using it, such as Babylon 5, seaquest DSV.
However, I am hearing less and less of this program...nowadays.

Ricky, I agree with you and it is very sad.
I know a lot of great 3d works that were done in LightWave 3d.
Taron used to work in LightWave 3d.
Dmitry Savinoff also have a lots of works done in LightWave

It looking like total domination by Autodesk these days and I wonder how long some of these smaller companies can hold on. Shame really.

I think there still are many TV series made with Lightwave, anda bit more recent than Seaquest and Babylon 5... that was... what?!... 15 years ago?!
Think more of "24", "CSI", "House", "Battlestar Galactica", "Sarah Connor Chronicles", "Lost" and tons more. Most is Lightwave and still some feature filmes here and there (like all Mark II or III sequences form "Iron Man")
More at Lightwave3D site. Look at the "Projects List"
