Join us Thursday June 11, 2009 from 7-9pm in the B2 Theater, for the first LAFS Computer Animation User Group Meeting with our special guests StudioGPU, Daniel Bigelow, and Robert Silva for a night of art and technology.
Please RSVP with Lauren Bentle, lbentle [at] lafilm [dot] com
StudioGPU- Software Developers
In development for over 5 years, software developers StudioGPU present their rendering technology "MachStudio Pro". StudioGPU claims "production cycles that often take days or weeks are now reduced to minutes or even seconds. this is not an incremental shift, but a bold workflow change to the way 3D CG content is created".
Dan Bigelow- Artist & Designer
Artist, illustrator, director & designer Dan Bigelow has worn many hats in his creative career. we have asked him to talk about the work he has done for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim program, "Metalocalpyse", seasons 1 & 2 . Dan developed, drew. colored all prop elements on the show. Mr. Bigelow will bring his unique perspective to creating art for entertainment & broadcast television.
Robert Silva- Environment Artist & LAFS Course Director
LAFS Course Directors Robert Silva will be demonstrating the Unreal Engine. Robert will show how easy it is to get up and running with the Unreal Editor.State of the art video game technology has never been so accessible. if you are interested in making your own video games, Unreal is currently dominating the game authoring market, let our in house expert show you the ropes.

This sounds impressive can you provide more details?

Here's a blurb below - hard to describe meaningfully because this is one of those "seeing is believing" kind of things.
MachStudio Pro is visualization and rendering software that lets 3D artists create and manipulate lights, materials, and HDR cameras in a real-time, non-linear workflow environment to achieve film quality results. It harnesses the multi-core, parallel-processing power of the GPU to enable the artist to manipulate and revise everything from lighting and cameras to ambient occlusion and materials, while being viewed as they will look in the final frame.
Blog post on FireUser describes first impressions. Look for the post "AMD makes a smart move with MachStudio Pro".
But the best thing is to see the showcase of samples and note the render times on StudioGPU site
Also NOTE: The LAFS User Group meeting has changed dates to Friday June 26th!

Is MachStudio Pro used only for previewing how the final render will look or it can be actually used for rendering with GPU?

MachStudio Pro is both for previewing and final render. They are one in the same. The preview is really just a live capture of the final render - just the viewport is different. Of course you can turn on an off fx and layers for detailed work, or turn everything on to preview your work in final render form.
At render time you can switch up anti-aliasing for the higher res rendering, adjust compression, final size, frame rate, etc.
Or you can export out your final render in passes for additional fx composting.
There are several videos explaining how it works at
in the Machtudio Pro >> tour section of the studiogpu site
The most relevant is called "Rendering"

Thank you DangerDanger,
I would be very nice if you could attach some images that would show the quality of the render.
