Have you tried deepMesh3D yet?
deepMesh is a low-poly 3d modelling program that comes somewhere between milkshape and 3dsmax for tools and workflow. It's very easy to pick up for beginners, while providing everything an experienced artist would expect.
There's a built-in uv-mapper, materials, skinned animation and a lightmapper, and it supports over 20 model formats.
I wonder if this could be a good replacement for milkshape for anyone who finds the blender interface too complex.
