how can i controll a 3D animation by sound?

Hello everyone, I wonder how it is possible to develop a 3D animation controlled by sound, for example a virtual puppet that reacts in real time to different types of music that we put

Regarding your question about 3d puppet I think it is possible but with plugins. Theoretically it is possible to wire specific animations with specific sound paterns but it's quite complicated and I don't know if a ready solution exists for 3ds max or other 3d animation software.
