If you created an action in the dope sheet in blender, make sure you press the F button near the action name to salvage it when you save your scene. Otherwise it will be deleted when you save the scene.
This is the stupidest and the most unintuitive thing in Blender. No decent application destroys your work without telling you this.
Blender does this silently.
A fucking whole day lost doing a marvelous animation for it to just be destroyed by blender.
For Blender Devs...
Number 1 rule in software application design: Never destroy the user work, especially do not do it without warning.
