MAX is pretty much industry standard for games. Maya is great, but it is mostly used for high poly modeling for film.

If you are a student you can get a 3 year trial of Maya from the autodesk website. It's a great option! Although Maya isn't exactly simple...

I too am a writer/sound designer who loves animation. It has been tough finding people to aid in my fanfilm, but I have managed a team of 10 so far! Keep trying, you will find people!
