I would stick with photoshop since it's easier to find tutorial for it ). It's also pretty well known so I can ask around if I encounter any problem.

or you could just create another poly (seem easy enough) then use boolean to get rid of the other half and finally, reposition it on top of the sword.

Looks good. But the ground is a bit too perfect in my opinion, and it would be nice if the actions/ movement of the robots were a little bit more extreme. The attacks look a bit weak right now.
